Know any good apps for scheduling medical staff??

I'm currently working on a project to help a customer better create, manage, and distribute their staff schedules. I constantly feel like this is not a specific problem that needs new development, but that I just need to implement an existing scheduling system for them.

Can anyone recommend scheduling software? I would prefer free and open-source, but its not a must.

Any thoughts/experiences helping provide software solutions to help manage schedules? Medical staffing seems like a complete nightmare to me. All sorts of wierd rules, assignments, and special cases that have to be dealt with.

Why don't you use CentricityPM, create schedules for the staff like you would for doctors. Just an idea.

Centricity is far from open source although it is a good product.

I ran into a great staff scheduling application that had a built-in HL7 interface engine as well. It was very extensible.

It would also schedule everything in a hospital from modality studies to ORs and whatever you wanted to add.

Impressive piece of software. It was not open source per se but it was very low cost for its capabilities. It had the ability to add plugins or addins by several means, including consuming web services and custom sql queries and SPs.

Drawbacks: It's a .net application so it doesn't run on Linux or UNIX.

Our PM support team is currently working with this customer to determine if their business needs for staff scheduling fit the paradigms that Centricity imposes on scheduling. In the meantime I'm looking at other software and considering what we'd need to invest for custom development of a webapp to help them manage their schedules.

Budget is still up in the air, but I'm looking at other products to see how they approach the problem. Drop me an email with a website if you can and I'll have a look.

The Mono .NET interpreter is actually quite good, you'd be surprised at what .NET code will run in *NIX these days.

Ansos One-Staff is ranked No 1 for last 2 years in Staff/Nurse Scheduling Segment by users of KLAS, an independent research firm. I have been working on this product for last 2+ years & the roadmap for this product looks very impressive. I know this post is a bit dated and you might have found your solution, but there is this project on sourceforge that sounds promising. You might be able to tweak it to your liking and purpose.
