Specifying extension in filename?

HI guys!
Is it necessary to put an extension like this ".xml" as for my file name in the file writer when I convert HL7 to xml? and vice versa?

e.g. File Name: ${message.type}.xml

It isn't required - your filenames can be whatever you'd like.

But I tried earlier the transformation of XML to HL7. a file is created on the output directory and not an HL7 file.
